    Did you know? A multinational hotel group has been found guilty of violating China’s Personal Information Protection law (PIPL) by the Guangzhou Internet Court. The group has been ordered to delete the data, pay damages, as well as issuing an apology. Why does this matter to you? This significant ruling is the first court judgment on cross-border data transfer and is a warning to businesses not take the consent and other requirements for cross-border transfer under the PIPL lightly.

    In our previous alert, we reported on the proposal of the China Administration of Cyberspace (“CAC”) to relax the cross-border data transfer compliance requirements under the PRC Personal Information Protection Law (“PIPL”). On 22 March 2024, the CAC issued the much-anticipated Provisions on the Promotion and Regulation of Cross-border Data Transfer (“Provisions”) which confirm the relaxation measures which will have significant implications for multinational businesses.
