    SEVEN-year-old Albertine Eeles from Bangalow Public School has been named a finalist in the Art Gallery of NSW’s Young Archie portrait competition — the junior counterpart to the renowned Archibald Prize. Albertine was chosen as one of 70 finalists in the 5–8 years category from more than 3,000 entries for her touching portrait, Papa in London. “My papa was in London working, and he sent a selfie, and I missed him,” she said.

    BYRON Shire Council will proceed with plans to revitalise Apex Park at Main Beach as part of its long-term vision for enhancing the Byron Bay foreshore, but has deferred discussions around relocating the contentious beachfront car park, which has divided the community. At last week’s council meeting, councillors voted to prioritise the design of a new play space at Apex Park, following the removal of the old playground in 2023 due to safety concerns.

    AFTER beginning her writing career in the Northern Rivers as a teenager, author Emma Grey is thrilled that Ballina-based TV production company Magpie Pictures has optioned the screen rights to her novel Pictures of You. Grey’s mum Claire Burnham was born in Bangalow and raised in Nashua, while her father Barrie Virtue was born in Lismore. The couple moved to Canberra in 1964 after then MP for Richmond Doug Anthony invited Virtue to become his press secretary.

    THE Dragon Egg Treasure Hunt at Crystal Castle has proven such a hit with families that the attraction has extended the experience until June 26. Launched in the lead-up to Easter, the interactive adventure invites children to follow an illustrated treasure map on a quest through the Shambhala Gardens, located at Crystal Castle in Montecollum in the Byron Bay hinterland.
