    Byron Shire residents would once again be required to pay for parking permits under a proposal from Council staff being considered at this week’s Council meeting. Less than a year after the permit fees were abolished in an attempt to appease those impacted by the introduction of parking meters in Brunswick Heads, councillors will consider reintroducing them at this Thursday’s meeting.

    A controversial development on flood-prone land near the Mullumbimby Showground is a step closer, after Byron Council and the developer reached a court settlement in relation to one of two development applications (DAs) for the site. Residents living near 30 Chinbible Avenue have fought for over a year against plans to subdivide the 12,340m2 lot into seven residential lots, which could then host up to 37 houses in total.

    Byron Shire Council could create a designated space for people sleeping in their cars in a bid to provide safety and some basic amenities for this part of the Shire’s growing homeless community. The option was raised by Greens Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye, at last week’s meeting, where councillors voted in favour of exploring options for emergency housing accommodation on Council-owned land.

    A locally-made film exploring the social impact of the 2022 floods in Lismore is being launched this week, with a screening taking place in Lismore on May 8. When the River Rose, directed by Catherine Barker and featuring Kate Stroud, follows five community members impacted by the disaster, three years after the event. Ms Stroud, a local artist and flood survivor, speaks with each of the survivors, exploring the ongoing challenges of rebuilding and the lasting effects on their lives.

    An application to remove/demolish a single-storey 1920s home in the Bangalow Heritage Conservation area and replace it with two, two-storey houses with swimming pools has been refused by Byron Shire Council. Under the application, which came before Council’s last meeting, the owners of the federation-style home sought permission for the $1.19 million development on 7 Leslie Street, Bangalow.
