    Byron Shire Council is once again turning its attention to the highly contentious issue of how to provide Mullumbimby with a sustainable, long-term water supply. Seven months ago, the newly-elected Council reversed an earlier decision by the previous Council to abandon the town’s reliance on its local weir at Lavertys Gap (Wilsons Creek) in favour of connection to the Rous County Council (RCC) water supply which serves the rest of the Shire.

    Plans to revamp and restore the Byron Bay foreshore from Fishheads to the Beach Cafe are a step closer to reality, after Byron Shire Council passed its concept plan for the famous stretch last week. After years of planning, debate and consultation, councillors unanimously approved the Byron Bay Foreshore Concept Plan at last week’s meeting.

    A local animal welfare charity is calling on Byron Council to support them in addressing the ongoing issue of rooster dumping in the Shire. In a presentation to Byron Council this week, Julie O’Shea from ‘Who Gives a Cluck’, will ask for a range of measures to stop, or reduce, this cruel and resource-taxing practice. Ms O’Shea told The Echo around 50 roosters had been dumped in the Shire in the past six months alone.

    A large industrial estate would be built on land opposite the Cavanbah Centre in Byron Bay under a planning proposal coming before Byron Shire Council on Thursday. Proposed by the developer behind the nearby Harvest housing estate (NSPT Pty Ltd) the so-called ‘Byron Bay Industry Hub’ would be located on the site of the former Sunnybrand poultry processing plant and Ingham at 268 Ewingsdale Road.
