While it's already been hot enough for summertime activities for the past few weeks in Reno, the official start of summer begins Friday June 20th, at 7:42pm. The earth is tiled at a 23.5 degree angle, and as the earth travels around the sun, the amount of direct sunlight we receive changes. During the Summer Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is pointed towards the sun, but during the Winter Solstice the Northern Hemisphere is pointed away. It is the reverse for the Southern Hemisphere.

A Red Flag Warning is up for northern Nevada from Thursday at 1pm through Friday at 11:59pm. Wind gusts will exceed 30mph, ranging from 30-40mph on Thursday and 40-45mph on Friday. Wind prone areas could see wind gusts between 50 and 60mph, especially on Friday. Ridgetops could see wind gusts over 60mph. Relative humidity values will be low as well, increasing fire danger. Wind speeds will lighten some at night, but it will still be breezy.

A Red Flag Warning is still in effect for the Truckee Meadows through 11pm Friday night because of gusty winds and low relative humidity values. Wind speeds will be a little lower this weekend, but still gusting near 30mph in the afternoon. Some spots on Friday are gusting over 35mph. High pressure is currently in place to our east with a low moving into the Pacific Northwest. Northern Nevada is caught in between the two, with dry southwesterly flow along the jet stream.

A Red Flag Warning is issued for the Sierra Front Friday morning at 11am through 11pm Friday night because of gusty winds and low relative humidity. The warning includes Washoe, northern Lyon, Chuchill, and Pershing county. The difference between a Fire Weather Watch and Warning is the confidence level and timing. A watch is when the ingredients are there for critical fire danger, but it's not immanent. A warning is when it is happening, confidence is high.

When temperatures soar well above average for over two days the National Weather Service calls it a heat wave. A heat wave can pose risks to our health as well as our infrastructure, including transportation, electrical grids, water resources, and agriculture. Average for this time of year in Reno is in the upper 70's, which means highs will be around twenty degrees above average on Friday and Saturday. We've been in the 90's since Wednesday.
