Strong winds will be an issue this weekend, especially on Sunday as wind gusts will top 40mph. Wind prone areas could see wind gusts around 60mph, including places like Washoe Valley. There will be a lot of turbulence too, leading to some bumpy flights. A strong cold front will move through the region late Sunday into Monday, dropping temperatures from the mid 80's on Saturday to the mid 70's on Sunday and lower 60's on Monday.

Planting this time of year can be risky, because of huge temperature swings and the possibility of a freeze. June 29th is the latest freeze ever recorded at the Reno Airport, but the 30-year average is April 26th. The latest snow of one inch or more was recorded on May 31st, and the record for three inches or more was set on May 20th. Snow is hard to measure this time of year because it usually melts as it hits the ground.

After a cold and soggy weekend, more mild weather is in the forecast this week. It’s not a completely dry forecast, but temperatures will be in the mid-60s on Monday and in the 70s by Tuesday. There is a slight chance for a few showers or thunderstorms on Wednesday, but highs will still be several degrees above average for the end of April. Cooler air moves in again this coming weekend. Snow totals are impressive from our most recent storm.

Our latest storm is still on track and already bringing lots of high-level clouds to the area Friday morning. There is a slight chance for rain through 11 a.m., with a better chance for rain Friday afternoon, and snow in the Sierra Friday night. The showers Friday morning are mainly forming just to the east of Reno and along Highway 95. The showers will become more numerous Friday afternoon and heavier than this morning. Rain totals will be around a third of an inch by Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures are getting warm enough for showers and thunderstorms to develop in the heat of the day this week. Especially on Wednesday. The severe threat is low, but there could be a few isolated storms that could produce some flash flooding mainly on Wednesday. The storms will favor the Sierra both Tuesday and Wednesday, but the storms will be more numerous on Wednesday as a cold front moves south. Reno will be in the clear by Thursday morning as storm coverage moves south along with the front.
