The man suspected of abducting and raping two nurses from Ga-Chuene clinic in Limpopo has been arrested, according to Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba. The Premier together with the Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe briefed the media earlier today on the developments in the case. An armed suspect allegedly overpowered the security guard at the 24-hour clinic and abducted the two nurses.

A referendum would be needed to allow Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to extend his term of office, according to human rights lawyer and activist, Doug Coltart. This comes after a ZANU-PF parliamentarian confirmed that the ruling party and a faction of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change planned to amend the Zimbabwe Constitution to extend the President’s term of office.

The African National Congress (ANC) has joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the family of Chris Hani in requesting government to open an inquest into his murder. Hani, who was the SACP general secretary, was killed at his home in Boksburg in the east of Johannesburg in April 1993. His convicted murderer Janusz Walus is expected to arrive in his country of origin, Poland, this morning.

Save The Children has called for people who have taken minors to be part of illegal mining at a Stilfontein in the North West to be prosecuted. This after police confirmed that 14 minors were arrested for illegal mining, 13 from Mozambique and one from Zimbabwe. Gugu Xaba, CEO of Save The Children South Africa says the South African government has been engaging neighbouring countries about the concerns that have migrants coming into the country.

There has been an overall decline in serious crimes by 5.1%. This is according to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. He was releasing the quarterly crime stats for the period July to September 30th in Johannesburg on Monday. Mchunu says the murder rate has reduced by 5.8%. “Contact crime decreased by 3.0%, property-related crime saw a reduction of 9.9%, and other serious crime decreased by 3.4%.
