Police have refuted claims that they are not willing to admit to hospital the recently resurfaced illegal mineworkers in Stilfontein, North West. The Stilfontein Solidarity Committee earlier released a statement saying some illegal miners who were recently retrieved need immediate healthcare and should not be in police custody. VIDEO | Police confirmed last week that all illegal miners were successfully evacuated.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IPF) says it’s working towards demystifying the myth that they are a regional or tribal party. It has opened its first office in Mahikeng, North West. Though the IFP has been contesting elections in the North West, it has not managed to secure a seat at any of the municipalities or in the provincial legislature. The Tautona Velenkosini Hlabisa House has been unveiled. The IFP says it’s on a mission to make inroads into the North West.

The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa) has defined the Stilfontein saga, as a post-apartheid massacre, that has even surpassed Marikana. The government-led retrieval operation resulted in the retrieval of 246 illegal miners and 78 bodies between Monday and yesterday. Prior to this, a community-led operation retrieved over 1 000 illegal miners and nine bodies.

Police say a cage will be lowered underground at shaft 11 in Stilfontein this morning to verify reports by community volunteers that there are no longer any illegal miners underground. The volunteers reported that there are no illegal miners underground, apart from some human remains that they could not manage to bring to the surface. Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says they will only be able to verify this in the morning, after lowering a cage underground.
