She began to take inventory of hauls from other shopping trips and noticed that not all of her clothing fit in her closet; she had to step over tote bags from previous shopping trips. “It's terrifying,” she says.

    Tracey Campos sat in a tree, on a platform more than 10 feet above the ground, patiently waiting for deer. Decked out in camouflage gear and holding a crossbow, she quietly listened to the leaves falling and the chipmunks scrambling through the branches. Her long curly hair was pulled back away from her face and tucked under her hood. Campos had gotten up around 3:30 a.m. on a Sunday. Before the sun began to rise, she occupied her perch above the Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island.

    I’ve found myself back to this newsletter. 2023 and 2024 have been a whirlwind of changes. I lived through a second media layoff in November of last year. I was the last Earthling on the Gizmodo/Earther desk. Sometime in the summer of 2023 my left eye began to twitch from work stress. It got worse over time. It didn’t go away until about a week after my layoff. I do miss the people I worked with. They were great at their jobs and they were also lovely people to share an office with.

    A couple of weeks ago, we marked the 7th year anniversary of Hurricane Maria. A Category 5 hurricane, it was one of the strongest ever recorded to hit the Caribbean and the U.S. But the aftermath of the hurricane, just like we are now seeing with Hurricane Helene, lasted for months beyond the initial landfall.
