Dear Reader, It's officially winter! Happy holidays to all of you who are celebrating something this month, and I hope your Thanksgivings were as scrumptious as ours. If you think about it, Thanksgiving is a preamble to a much heavier season of eating. Christmas and Kwanzaa are staples of December. Depending on the year, Hanukkah and Diwali can fall on this month too. Buddhists celebrate Bodhi Day this month. In Mexico, you could be celebrating Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

With the news of the devastation that Hurricane Helene has wrought on the lower quadrant of the eastern seaboard, we’re thinking of our readers in the disaster area and hoping for your safety. As the east coast reckons with a Category 4 hurricane, wildfire season is starting out west. Kentucky’s forest fire season begins on October 1st. In Wyoming, Big Horn Mountain residents have been given evacuation orders from Elk Fire, which was first reported on Friday.

In the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, the United States started digging 2,500 miles of tunnels under the ice sheets of Greenland, hoping to one day store as many as 600 nuclear weapons on the island that it hoped to launch against Russia in the event of a nuclear war. Denmark, to which Greenland belongs, had no idea of the secret military operation. It had, however, given the U.S. army permission to build a research facility on the island with the purpose of studying arctic conditions.
