New shoes always kick up my running motivation. So when ASICS kindly sent over the newly designed GT-2000 13 last month, I couldn’t wait to lace up and get out the door. When you’re running, the less you’re thinking about your feet the better, or at least that’s how I feel. The new GT-2000 13 allowed my mind to wander.

Sometimes you need a way to focus that takes you outside, mentally and physically. Last February I knew I needed running, and with it a training goal that would see me through to a fall marathon. Fortunately my training partner also wanted a goal to keep him motivated. And with his deferred 2020 Detroit Marathon race entry in hand, we set our training on 42K in the Motor City together. Detroit has a level of grit that has developed in part of being dealt a fair share of tough times.

Craft beer, pizza and coffee: Montreal’s Mile End is a food-lover’s destination for all of this and much more. On a weekend in mid-September, many of the local restaurants and cafes in this boho residential neighbourhood are packed with runners taking part in the Beneva Montreal Marathon. Mile End spans about 40 blocks bordered by Mount Royal and Saint-Laurent Boulevard, and after arriving in Montreal on Friday, the margarita pizza at Pizzeria Magpie hits the spot.

From pasta dinners the day before race day to a decadent post race burger, runners enjoy a good meal. But when you’re not fueling your body properly, you likely feel definitely feel it. I know I do, especially when I’m in training mode. With fall race season in full gear, and everyone back to a regular schedule, it’s a good time to quickly refresh your nutritional needs.

Sad but true, the air has that slight crispness that can only mean one thing: Summer is almost over.
