On a Friday night in December, I counted a dozen people competing in a cornhole tournament in a gravel courtyard decorated with string lights outside a hole-in-the-wall called Dinky’s BBQ. While this scene could be a typical Friday night anywhere in Texas, it was eight thousand miles away in Northern Thailand. Every winter, I head to Chiang Mai, one of Austin’s sister cities, to escape cedar season and work remotely for a few weeks.

My first trip to Angkor Wat, the 12th-century temple complex dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, was during this period, bouncing along in the back of a tuk-tuk puttering down glistening tarmac lined with towering trees.
