Newry Crown Court has heard that the mental health of Lady Eleanor Donaldson is deteriorating, as she and her husband stand trial in relation to alleged sex offences. Lady Eleanor, 59, is the wife of former DUP leader and Christian, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, aged 62. Last year, Northern Ireland’s longest-serving MP stepped down as DUP leader shortly before his arrest in relation to 18 counts of alleged sexual abuse, spanning 1985 to 2008.

Christian organisations are calling for a national day of prayer ahead of the second day of debate in Westminster on the Assisted Dying Bill later next week. MPs are expected to vote this summer on whether terminally ill adults should be allowed assistance to end their lives. Care, Affinity, the Christian Medical Fellowship, the Christian Institute, Christian Concern and the Evangelical Alliance are collectively calling for Christians to pray about the bill on Tuesday, 11th June.

A major Christian gathering planned for Belfast city centre has been cancelled just days before it was set to take place. The March for Jesus, scheduled for Saturday, 7th June, was expected to attract more than 10,000 participants. March for Jesus is a global movement; in October 2024, March for Jesus Dublin saw Christians walk from the city’s Garden of Remembrance to Dáil Éireann, the Irish parliament.

The future of church buildings has been described as the biggest challenge facing the UK by the National Churches Trust (NCT), as it launches a major survey to learn why churches are closing. In Wales, 25 per cent of churches have closed in the last decade alone. Chairman of the National Churches Trust, Sir Philip Rutnam said church buildings are facing an existential moment. Key areas of concern include how frequently a building is used, its current condition, and the cost of maintaining it.

A Christian financial charity has warned that debt is worsening mental health across the UK. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) found that 85 per cent of people in debt feel “isolated” due to their financial situation. Over half reported feeling unable to leave their home because of shame, and many said financial anxiety had driven them to thoughts of suicide. Overall, the majority reported suffering with poor mental health linked to money.
