The State of Emergency in Canterbury's storm-hit Banks Peninsula has finally been lifted. But almost two weeks after severe rain lashed the region, causing flooding and slips, some Akaroa residents are still waiting to return home. Alan Hemsley had been living in rental accommodation since he was evacuated from his home on Aylmers Valley Road ten days ago. He said the slip, which sat above his property on the nearby Lighthouse Road, was significant.

A Banks Peninsula woman whose daughter has been evacuated from her Akaroa home because of a slip says it has been a stressful week worrying about whether it will get worse. Christchurch City Council extended the state of emergency for the peninsula on Thursday - a week after heavy rain caused widespread flooding and slips. Council controller Helen White said the threat of further slips remain, and they will reassess the state of emergency on Saturday.

A Banks Peninsula woman whose daughter has been evacuated from her Akaroa home because of a slip says it has been a stressful week worrying about whether it will get worse. The Christchurch City Council was reviewing whether to lift or extend the state of emergency for the peninsula on Thursday, a week after heavy rain caused widespread flooding and slips. Staff were monitoring a slip on Lighthouse Road, with four homes in the area evacuated as a precaution.

Principals say they will be keeping a close eye on the Auditor-General's inquiry into the revamped school lunch programme that has been riddled with problems. The Ministry of Education's programme has been under fire since the School Lunch Collective took over provision of lunches to about 430 schools this year, shaving millions off the cost of the scheme. The watchdog said the inquiry was prompted by concerns raised both in the media and directly with its office.
