Dear Editor, We read with interest the editorial on the BMJ’s commitment to data and code sharing (1). As epidemiologists, our research involves using large routine healthcare databases in the UK and internationally, for which data sharing is not a legal possibility. Similar restrictions also apply to many other data used in epidemiological studies in order to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained and to comply with existing data protection legislation.
