SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - While Election Day in November seems far away, municipalities in Chatham County are already developing a list of potential projects for SPLOST 8. The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax has been supported by Chatham County voters for decades. It adds a 1% sales tax to any purchase made within the county. This year, locals may have the chance to vote on the tax’s eighth round, but a lot needs to be done before then.

(WTOC) - After heated debate during Thursday’s Savannah city council meeting, council members voted unanimously to table their vote on a $14 million investment into a parking lot next to Enmarket Arena. The money would be used to clean toxic chemicals out of the ground and build a surface lot, bringing 1,000 new parking spaces to the arena. Right now, the city leases the potential future parking lot’s land.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Thursday, Savannah city council could pass a budget amendment that would bring a $14 million investment to a parking lot at Enmarket Arena. Ahead of the meeting, the price tag has already sparked controversy among some council members. “We thought it was a parking lot project, and it turned into a pretty expensive project,” said Mayor Johnson. A big reason behind such a large expense comes from the toxic industrial chemicals found in the ground.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - Monday, researchers were back on Hilton Head Island after a whale beached over the weekend. They made their first attempts at finding at why the juvenile male came ashore. “We’re doing an external exam, already finished that this morning, and now we’re doing an internal exam,” said Clay George, a marine mammal biologist with NOAA. George said the young male was likely already unwell when he hit the shore on Saturday, far from where he should’ve been.
