1 INTRODUCTION Reflective functioning was first introduced as the operationalization of mentalizing, which refers to the ability to understand one's own and other's mental states (Fonagy et al., 1991, 1993). Slade (2005) introduced the concept of parental reflective functioning to describe the parent's ability to reflect on the ongoing psychological processes in their child and in themselves as a parent.
