Last year, I finally achieved my life’s ambition to become a pampered cat. It only lasted a day, but being a cat was just as gloriously self-centered and lazy as I had always imagined. I highly recommend it. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, I was my normal, happy pre-feast self, with visions of new and even more fattening recipes dancing in my head. Then, BLAM!!!! At 7:35 exactly, I was seized with a massive coughing fit. My eyes filled, my nose filled and I knew I was doomed.

Photo suppliedAnneli Byrd I’ve decided I want to be a hermit. Did you know that being a hermit was actually a legitimate job back in the day? Can you imagine? No Zoom meetings! Photo suppliedAnneli Byrd I want to introduce you to one of my favorite fictional women, Amelia Peabody. If you haven’t yet met Amelia, dash to your local library and grab Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters. It’s the first of a very long series (Amelia would demand no less). I admire Amelia for her self-assurance. Usually, her level of confidence is only gifted to politicians and very small children.

Photo suppliedAnneli Byrd I love to travel, but even I have to admit there are downsides, the worst of which is cost. Naturally, the farther away one goes, the more it costs, and one needs to consider whether it's worth spending your retirement and your children's college fund to get there (yes). To help you plan for future adventures, I've broken down cost and a few other common inconveniences.
