Mike Hazen had just hung up the phone, having spoken with me about the Diamondbacks’ upcoming “Brain Tumor Awareness Night,” a pregame event Tuesday night at Chase Field in which the Ivy Brain Tumor Center that treated his late wife’s fatal glioblastoma will receive a donation from the Nicole Hazen Fund for Hope. The subject of glioblastoma and brain cancer, in general, is personal for Hazen, the D-backs’ general manager, as it is for me. My brother was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2011.

While initial X-rays were negative for a fracture, the 23-year-old Brito continued to report symptoms. Following additional consultations with team physicians and hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham, the surgery was recommended. Brito, the club's No. 10 prospect, had surgery Friday to address a high-grade ligament sprain of his right thumb he suffered while sliding into third base during Triple-A Columbus’ April 17 game against Louisville.
