MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball league and is the oldest among the four major sports leagues in the United States and Canada. It consists of 30 teams, split evenly between the National League (NL) and the American League (AL), with 15 teams in each. The NL was established in 1876 and the AL in 1901 as independent organizations. Starting in 1903, the two leagues worked together while remaining separate until they officially merged into one entity under the leadership of the Commissioner of Baseball in 2000. MLB also governs Minor League Baseball, which includes 256 teams that are affiliated with the Major League teams. Additionally, MLB collaborates with the World Baseball Softball Confederation to organize the World Baseball Classic, an international tournament.

That’s a remarkable baseball family tree.

DETROIT -- For the Red Sox, what felt like an uphill climb for hours seemed like it was going to lead to one of the most rewarding wins of the season. That was the feeling that permeated through the dugout when nerveless rookie Kristian Campbell snapped an 0-for-14 drought and a 3-for-38 slump by belting a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the 11th, putting the Red Sox back up in a game that twisted and turned all night.

Higashioka had been sidelined since May 1 (retroactive to April 30) with a mild left intercostal strain that he sustained while running out a three-run double in an April 29 win over the A's. He appeared in two rehab games with Triple-A Round Rock, going 2-for-8 with two doubles. The Rangers placed shortstop Corey Seager on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain on Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday, and activated catcher Kyle Higashioka from the IL in a corresponding move.

DETROIT -- There are outings when Tanner Houck shows flickers of the pitcher who made the All-Star team last season. Then, there are nights like Monday, when a mishap is so dramatic that it derails his momentum entirely. Four weeks after the game in which he allowed 11 earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings in Tampa, Houck had the ignominious distinction of nearly mirroring that line in the opener of a three-game series against the Tigers.
