Rockford Rivets comeback falls short to Pit Spitters

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WIFR) - In the final game of their shortened homestand, the Rockford Rivets fell 8-7 to the Traverse City Pit Spitters Friday night. Rockford trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. Nic Mirabella’s pitch gets behind the catcher, Tate Shimao beat the throw to home to cut into the deficit. This happened a second time to make it a 6-3 game. Later in the inning, Cade Climie tallied an RBI single with a hit to left field. Rivets trailed 6-4.

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WIFR) - The diamond turns into the racetrack Thursday for Speedway Night as the Rockford Rivets honored the Rockford Speedway. The attraction entertained hundreds of racing fans every week throughout the summer for 76 years. Once its final season ended in 2023, it left a void in people’s lives. SUNRISE, Fla. (WIFR) - Almost 30 players have both played for the Rockford IceHogs and won the Stanley Cup. The most recent is defenseman Gustav Forsling who became a back-to-back champion Tuesday after the Florida Panthers defended their title against the Edmonton Oilers. Forsling played with the Hogs from 2016-2019 and made his NHL debut on Oct. 12, 2016 with the Chicago Blackhawks.

BELOIT, Wis. (WIFR) - New homes will soon be under construction in Beloit. City Council approved a $1 million incentive June 2 to build a 138-home subdivision at Murphy Wood and Creed roads. Some of them will be duplexes or multi-family homes. Developer Next Generation should break ground this fall. The million dollars is for gap financing to build infrastructure, including water and sewer mains, electric and natural gas lines, sidewalks and roads.

BELOIT, Wis. (WIFR) - The Beloit Sky Carp fell to the Fort Wayne Tincaps 5-1 in Sunday afternoon’s series finale, which started after a roughly 45-minute rain delay. Jack Costello opened the scoring for Fort Wayne in the top of the second with a two-RBI single. He went for second, but Nestor Rios threw him out from near home plate. Sky Carp down 2-0. Michael Snyder put Beloit on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a rolling grounder. Sky Carp trail 2-1.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Combining environmental science with large-scale outdoor art: that’s the vision of the ‘Rooted in Rockford: Art and Tree Science’ exhibit, opening Saturday at Klehm Arboretum. LISLE, Ill. (WIFR) - The North Boone Vikings beat the IC Catholic Knights for the second straight season in the IHSA 2A Super-Sectionals. The Vikings won 5-3 in 2024 and 7-6 in Monday’s rematch. IC Catholic hadn’t given up a run in the postseason heading into Super-Sectional. That changed in the bottom of the first when Avarie Torres drove in Khloe Osborne after a Knights throwing error. North Boone adds two more in the 3rd inning to take a 3-0 lead.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - With high school spring sports coming to a close in the next couple of weeks, there are lot of area teams and athletes who have had success to end their respective seasons. This includes those at the IHSA Boys Track and Field State Finals. In Class 1A, Winnebago senior Nicolai Martino is a state champion in both the 1600 and 3200 meter run. Rockford Christian senior Andrew Jurien placed 5th in the 1600 and RC junior Julian Honeyville took 6th in the 3200.
