Leaders from across the state and nation mourned the death of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated early Saturday morning along with her husband. Two men who were “paid taxpayer money to bring peace to Minneapolis” are now facing federal gun charges. Alvin Anthony Watkins, Jr., 50, of Saint Anthony, and Kashmir Khaliffa McReynolds, 35, of Minneapolis, were indicted in a three-count indictment unsealed Friday. The indictment charges Watkins with felon in possession of a firearm and McReynolds with disposing of a firearm to a convicted felon and possession of firearm while employed for a prohibited person.

Derrick John Thompson was found guilty by a Hennepin County jury Friday on all 15 felony counts against him, including five counts of third-degree murder. Thompson was traveling in an Escalade at speeds of nearly 100 mph on June 16, 2023, when he exited I-35W, barreled through a red light at the intersection of East Lake Street and 2nd Avenue in Minneapolis, and struck a Honda Civic carrying five young Somali women. All of them died instantly.

A Ramsey County judge has granted class certification to a group of hundreds of undercover law enforcement officers who say a state board compromised their identities. The Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) was sued in January by three undercover police officers and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) after the POST Board allegedly compromised the names of at least 257 undercover police officers.

A Minneapolis man is facing charges of obstructing and fleeing police during a federal raid earlier this week. Chaos erupted for several hours Tuesday on East Lake Street in Minneapolis following false social media reports of immigration raids taking place near Bloomington Avenue on the city’s south side. Crowds started forming around mid-morning and escalated to pushing, shoving, and throwing trash, while others tried to block law enforcement vehicles from driving in the area.
