The star-studded night is finally over – the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG) – which is the watch industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. Every year, prizes are handed out in a variety of different categories at a ceremony in Geneva; the cue for some Oscars-like gushing acceptance speeches. The most coveted prize is the ‘Aiguille d’Or’ – which translates into English as ‘the golden hand’ (as in watch hand) – for outstanding achievement.

There are ‘new’ watch brands, ‘old’ watch brands, ‘revival’ watch brands, and then a few others we could call ‘phoenix’ watch brands. These are brands that were always there, but have somehow risen spectacularly from the ashes – often by referencing the back catalogue. Nivada Grenchen is one prime example: a company that has really hit its stride since the relaunch in 2020 by offering glorious Swiss watches with a distinctly retro twist, such as the magnificent Antarctic and Super Antarctic.

There’s one word that unites Porsche, TAG Heuer, and Mexico – and that’s Carrera. It’s the name that Porsche has tacked on to some of their most famous sports cars (think of the 911 Carrera) and it’s also the name of a well-known family of watches. Both are inspired by one of the most fearsome road races in the history of motorsport: the Carrera Panamericana.

We all, of course, walk in the shadows of those who came before us – which is just one reason why watches – which measure the inexorable passage of time – mean so much to all of us. But it’s rare to go on a watch launch that feels as poignantly symbolic as that of the new Nomadic Fior 555 GMT, which took place recently in Belfast (the ‘555’ refers to part of the city’s geographical co-ordinates). Specifically, the launch took place aboard the SS Nomadic: the boat after which the company is named.

The spectacle of GpB was the shock as much as anything. It was only in 1980 that the Quattro appeared from nowhere and it took people by surprise. I remember being at Monte Carlo in January 1980 and speculating whether 4WD would work in rallying. We won the manufacturers’ championship in 1981 with the Sunbeam-Lotus, against the Escort and the Nissan 1601 — simple straightforward rear-wheel-drive 240hp cars with an engine in the front; yet by 1984, 2WD was dead.
