    Jonathan is a 192-year-old giant tortoise and thought to be the world’s oldest living animal. In nearly two centuries, he has seen it all. Little wonder that he didn’t stop munching the lawn of Plantation House on the remote British island of St Helena as the electric Subaru Solterra pulled up at the Governor’s residence. Why would he? Jonathan was 54 when the automobile was invented; nothing new to see here then. Except that Jonathan is wrong.

    AbstractVascular systems are intimately related to the shape and spatial arrangement of the plant organs they support. We investigate the largely unexplored association between spiral phyllotaxis and the vascular system in Asteraceae flowers heads. We imaged heads of eight species using synchrotron-based X-ray micro-computed tomography and applied original virtual reality and haptic software to explore head vasculature in three dimensions.

    If Giorgetto Giugiaro had made it into art school, the Volkswagen Golf might never have been created, James Bond might never have had a submersible Lotus Esprit, Marty McFly might never have travelled through time in a DeLorean and Hyundai might never have made cars. But Giugiaro failed to make art school and so, reluctantly, went into car design instead. He’s now, aged 84, arguably the greatest living car designer with a host of truly memorable, groundbreaking and beloved vehicles to his name.
