It's the tall waterfalls that make one feel small, the panoramic views of Lake Superior and the trail itself that rises and falls and winds through the woods. Messersmith, the Twin Cities musician behind the songs "A Girl, a Boy and a Graveyard" and "Ghost," lets his mind drift on walks and hikes, tuning into the sounds around him.

MINNEAPOLIS - Dried leaves, bark scraps, fallen walnuts - just about everything on the forest floor looked like a morel. I was roughly 40 minutes into a forest trek to find morel mushrooms. The prized culinary ingredient appears for only a few weeks when lilacs bloom each spring. But almost nobody in the foray I had joined had found one yet. About 20 of us were picking through the woods in a state park an hour south of Minneapolis on a Saturday morning in early May.

STACY, Minn. - The sedatives worked quickly on the 300-pound black bear named Ethel. She circled in the morning sun and then dizzily sat down, huffing at her handlers as she laid her head near the corner of her pen and fell asleep. The first thing Peggy Callahan noticed was the paw on the bear's back right leg. The claws were twice as long the other three. The thick foot pad, which should have already naturally shed, looked fresh. "She just hasn't been putting any weight on it at all," Callahan said.
