The popularity of Jung Chang’s Wild Swans, first published in 1991, revealed a big market in the West for stories of women growing up in China. Such books subsequently became commonplace in English-language libraries. The authors were urbanite baby boomers who spent the 1970s learning from the peasants in the countryside and in the 1980s left China as soon as they could. They wrote for a Western audience hungry for knowledge about what had been happening all those years behind the bamboo curtain.

On the first Sunday of each month the artists of Bundeena, south of Sydney, open their studios up to the public. There are dozens of them, working in various media. Among the painters are Shen Jiawei and Wang Lan, he originally from Shanghai, she from Beijing. They have been married for more than forty years, the greater number of which they have spent here, in a suburb flanked by the sea on one side and National Park on the other.

The beginning is slow, the story is bleak, the hero is growing old and doddery, and there are no heroines, only victims. Yet China’s top-rating drama for 2023, The Long Season (Manchang de jijie), is gripping viewing. In Australia it is so far available only with the sometimes hilarious computer-generated subtitles provided on YouTube.

Whatever the result of Taiwan’s election this Saturday, the domestic outcome is likely to be rocky. The people of Taiwan will be voting for a new president and 113 members of the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan’s parliament. Judging by opinion polls, president Tsai Ing-wen will be succeeded by her vice-president, Lai Ching-te, ensuring the Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, a third four-year term. But the party looks likely to lose seats in the legislature even while retaining the presidency.

Christmas is coming to Taipei and the city is at least partially decked out for the season. In Muzha, on the city’s outskirts, the Catholic church has set up a nativity scene. There is as yet no baby in the manger and the scene looks rather forlorn. That’s somehow appropriate for Taiwan, where there is a dearth of actual babies in cradles.
Over the road from the church are two pet-grooming shops, testimony to the changing composition of Taiwanese households.
