As summer suddenly pitches up in October on Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, I swing a club chaotically around a championship green and remember the words of AA Milne: “Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad.” Undulating towards marram grass on sand dunes, the green gives way to a seven-mile beach with nothing on it but curlews. Behind me, a big white hotel juts up from the landscape under sky that’s as blue as a blackbird’s egg.
