    With summer officially underway, kids are invited to take advantage of ongoing summer camps from Slippery Rock University. The next in a series of three-day camps begin Monday at the Macoskey Center for Sustainability Education and Research. Kids ages 4 and 5 can attend from 8:30 a.m. until noon while kids 6 to 9 stay until 3:30 p.m. Themes include a summer safari, solar power, and cooking with two of the camps planned for July.

    A well-known local community member has passed away. Lifelong Butler native Fred Spohn was awarded the Purple Heart following service in Vietnam. He then worked at Pullman Standard before spending 37 years employed by Butler Township. After starting as a truck driver, Spohn was promoted to Road Superintendent. He was also a former chief of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department and an EMT for South Butler. Fred Spohn was 77 years old.

    Two recent Butler High School graduates are the recipients of a prestigious local scholarship. The Rosanne and Jane Cavalero Scholarships are distributed through the Pittsburgh Foundation for a male and female Butler High School graduating senior with the highest-grade point average who pursue post-secondary education. Evelyn Paserba and Alec Teff will each receive nearly $7,000 in scholarship funding.

    A settlement agreement has been reached between 54 State Attorney Generals and the Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced the $7.4 billion settlement that will see Pennsylvania receive $200 million over the next 15 years. This comes after the Supreme Court rejected a Settlement agreement in July of 2024 that would have seen the Sacklers able to use bankruptcy court for protection against further civil penalties.

    A Butler man has been placed in the Butler County Prison after it’s alleged he hit his child for not eating dinner. Charging documents accuse 31-year-old Russell Digiacomo of striking a 4-year-old child after its alleged the child wouldn’t eat their dinner. The alleged assault happened on Sunday and Saxonburg Police were called to the Summit Township home for a welfare check on Tuesday. When police arrived the child’s, mother accused Digiacomo of hitting the child.
