The leader of Plymouth City Council has written to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander asking for government support to reopen the city's former airport. Councillor Tudor Evans said he wanted to explore any "emerging opportunities" to support aviation after the airport shut in 2011. The Sutton Harbour Group, which has a 150-year lease on the site, had deemed the airport no longer viable and previously proposed building housing on the site.

A man has been injured after a crash between a bus and a car in Devon, police have said. The crash involving a double-decker bus and a car happened at about 07:35 GMT on Burcombe Hill, North Molton, Devon and Cornwall Police said. The male driver of the car, who suffered a serious leg injury, was cut from his vehicle by the fire service and taken to North Devon District Hospital. About 50 residents evacuated from their homes in Jersey due to a gas leak have been offered hotel accommodation, officials have said. The Government of Jersey said families from 21 Andium properties were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon in the Le Geyt area of St Saviour. It said Island Energy engineers were working to locate the leak in mains pipework in the road. Residents were able to return to their properties to collect vital belongings, said the government.

Jersey's head of customs and immigration is retiring after 38 years. Mark Cockerham joined Jersey Customs and Immigration Service (JCIS) as an officer in April 1986 and worked across borders, intelligence, investigation, goods control and immigration. He was promoted through the ranks to the head of service, which he held for the last six years. Rhiannon Small has been appointed as his successor with effect from 1 February.

Emergency services are responding to a suspected gas leak near Exeter Central train station. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service was called at 15:53 GMT to reports of gas leaking into a property on Queen Street. Four fire engines and a specialist vehicle were sent to the scene.
