After nearly three years, Debby Clark still has no idea what started the fight that resulted in her husband’s death. She told police at the time, in August 2022, that a man attacked and ultimately shot her husband, Scott “Scotty” G. Tanner, 35, in a parking lot at east Salem’s Geer Park where they all lived out of their cars. Officers arrived to find Clark screaming and lying on top of her dead husband. Marion County Circuit Court Judge Tom Hart on Monday sentenced Tanner’s killer, Thomas P.

An fire early Monday morning destroyed a home in south Salem’s Morningside neighborhood, displacing the resident and their dog. Salem firefighters responded to the fire around 4 a.m. after a caller reported seeing flames at the home and concerns about an elderly occupant and a dog still inside, according to a statement from the Salem Fire Department. Photos show the house was located at 1015 Southeast Ratcliff Drive.

Dozens marched across the Union Street Pedestrian Bridge Tuesday morning in recognition of the first day of Child Abuse Awareness Month. Most participants were teachers, classroom assistants and other employees of the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency’s Head Start programs, according to operations manager Debra Devine. Participants in the Tuesday walk looped from Riverfront Park to Wallace Marine Park and back.
