The Oregon Government Ethics Commission voted Friday to investigate Salem Mayor Julie Hoy and all seven Salem city councilors to determine if they participated in an illegal serial meeting leading up to former Salem City Manager Keith Stahley’s abrupt resignation in February. The commission voted 5-2 with one commissioner not voting due to a conflict of interest, to initiate a full investigation into a possible prohibited serial meeting between the mayor and city councilors.

Salem city councilors voted Monday to partially fund a program giving homeless people safe places to sleep in vehicles which had been cut in earlier budget proposals. Councilors voted 4-3 in favor of allocating $50,000 from a state sheltering grant toward the program in next year’s budget. It’s run by nonprofit Church at the Park. Church at the Park served 171 people last year through the program.

Oregon’s Veterans of Foreign Wars moved its operations to a new building on Northeast Liberty Street in Salem after nearly 40 years based in Portland. The Veterans of Foreign Wars is a national nonprofit that serves veterans, people in the military, and their families. Local VFW officials said the choice to move to Salem was strategic and that the group outgrew its old headquarters. The organization held an open house and ribbon cutting the afternoon of Friday, June 6.

No arrests have been made after a 52-year-old Salem pedestrian was killed by a vehicle on Northeast Silverton Road Sunday night, a release from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said. The man, identified as Michael Martinez, was struck by a vehicle at around 10 p.m. on the 6000 block of Northeast Silverton Road, northeast of city limits toward Northeast 60th Ave.
