By Ari LevinThe Artesia juniors little league all-stars won the state tournament, and will now play in the regional tournament. Team manager Donovan Garcia lost his voice in the excitement as Artesia defeated Silver City’s Copper Little League in the championship 18-2. The team has ties to the past: Robert Rodriguez, Jr. was a member of the 2019 juniors all-star team that went to the regional tournament as Artesia’s last state champion.

For the first time, this year the New Mexico Activities Association is allowing a limited number of full-contact practices in helmets and pads over the offseason. Roughly 160 prospective Bulldogs, according to athletic director Brian Taylor, are working through the hot summer heat to help the Bulldogs defend their back-to-back state titles.

That may have symbolized good things to come for Artesia Little League as they battled for a spot in the state tournament. Behind a complete-game shoutout from Jett Baca and strong defense, Artesia minor little league defeated Carlsbad Shorthorn 3-0 to win the district tournament on Wednesday. They will advance to play in the state tournament in Los Lunas.

Eddy County’s Board of County Commissioners canceled a bid to tear down the building, which has not had any use for several years. Built in 1947, the building has been a source of pride for residents of Otis, which is between Carlsbad and Loving. In 2019, commissioners voted to “decommission” the gym.
