Over the last several years, I’ve noticed a new type of business agreement between two or more companies in the watchmaking space. These have become common enough that I feel it is time to discuss them, while also suggesting the possible implications for the larger luxury space in general. The modern watch industry is constantly experimenting both in terms of the products companies make and the business structures they adopt to help them launch and maintain operations.

The VicenTerra AstroLUNA collection of watches is the most recent collection of timepieces from the boutique Swiss watchmaker founded by Vincent Plomb. The AstroLUNA is offered in two case styles, both in grade 5 titanium metal. The smaller VicenTerra AstroLUNA case is known as the “Classic” and is more traditionally round and 41.5mm wide. The standard VicenTerra AstroLUNA case (what you see here in this review) has a more complex design with a diameter of 43.5mm.

For the 25th anniversary of Formex, the Swiss company has decided to release its first full-ceramic watch. This timepiece is known as the Formex Essence Ceramica 41mm. It comes in a few styles, and it’s honestly quite lovely to wear on the wrist. As the name of the watch implies, the Ceramica is based on Formex’s Essence line, which has been produced in metal and carbon variants so far. The Essence case is also produced in several sizes, with the Ceramica being introduced at 41mm wide.

As part of the 150th anniversary of the American brand Bulova, the company has released a special edition watch that came out quite nicely, in my opinion. The new watch is known as the Bulova Marine Star Heritage 98B451. One objective of the watch was for Bulova to celebrate its heritage (a term I feel is woefully overused in the timepiece space right now) by digging into the brand’s formidable archives and trying to recreate something older-looking, but for today.

A number of years ago, I wrote about a new company called SilMach that had its eyes on the watch industry. The French company is a specialist in small electromechanical mechanisms that employ silicon parts for use in a variety of applications, not just watches.
