Allegra Spender has denounced “anonymous and misleading” pamphlets that the Australian Electoral Commission says had been distributed in her electorate of Wentworth without authorisation. At a press conference on Monday afternoon, the independent member for the eastern Sydney seat welcomed an announcement by the AEC that it would be investigating the election material. “This pamphlet spreads false, misleading and offensive claims about me, and does so anonymously,” she said.

The rightwing advocacy group Advance has acknowledged it is paying for election materials attacking the Greens to be used by third-party groups during the election campaign. “Advance is working with hundreds of volunteers from dozens of community groups to defeat Greens candidates and we make no apology,” a spokesperson said. The spokesperson said Advance did not fund groups directly but “we absolutely pay for anti-Greens campaign material to be at the disposal of volunteers”.

Australian elections have many proud traditions: democracy sausages, Akubra hats, and of course, salt of the earth “tradies” in campaign ads. The tradition continues down in Victoria, where a young man in an orange hi-vis vest, complete with a hard hat, makes an appearance in a campaign video for the former Liberal MP Tim Wilson. He also appears to be part of Wilson’s campaign to regain the seat of Goldstein, won by the teal independent Zoe Daniel in 2022.

Third-party groups are preparing federal election campaigns that include accusations that the Greens and teal independents threaten “Australia’s economic and social stability”, and also focus in part on their views on the Israel-Gaza war. One initiative, Better Australia, points to “proven results”reducing Greens support during the New South Wales local and Queensland state elections in 2024 in campaigns that focused on the party’s stance on Israel.
