A recent executive order of US President Donald Trump to pause for review all American assistance funded by or through the State Department and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has affected at least four projects run by the government in partnership with USAID. Moreover, as many as 300 NGOs, consultancies, and nonprofits that have been receiving aid and financial assistance directly from the agency will be affected for at least three months.

Kathmandu, Jan. 25 -- At least eight people in Kalikot district have tested positive for kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis or black fever) since the start of the current fiscal year. Of the infected patients, around 50 percent are children, according to officials at the Health Office, Kakikot. "In 2024, we recorded 16 cases of kala-azar infection in the district," said Hem Raj Bom, a kala-azar control focal person at the Health Office, Kalikot.

Kathmandu, Jan. 20 -- At least 76 incidents of fire were reported in the last one week, although the exact number of forest fire cases during this period remains unclear. Officials at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) have reported a marked uptick in forest fire cases nationwide. What has left officials much concerned now is the lack of rainfall for a prolonged period, which has created drought-like conditions.
