All of the letters we publish include a full first and last name as well as a city of residence. Sometimes the city is omitted if the writer includes a title that is relevant to the topic of the letter. There are several reasons why we require all writers to use their real names. First and foremost, it lets our readers know that these letters indeed come from real people. When readers question why certain stories get coverage and others don’t, there’s often the implication that these decisions are made with some intention by the newspaper to endorse some activities or points of view and sideline others. But often, many other factors come into play. Sometimes, it’s simply that we weren’t aware of an event taking place. At other times, there may be so much going on that we may not have the resources to be everywhere at once.
