Jennifer Johnson thought West Egg would be around forever. She opened the restaurant with her husband, Ben Johnson, in 2004 in an old warehouse. There were few other restaurants in the area besides Bacchanalia, Figo Pasta and Taqueria del Sol, but that didn't stop West Egg from becoming a top brunch destination where diners waited an hour for churro waffles. Twenty years later, faced with a lease renewal, Johnson decided not to sign on for another five to 10 years.

It was a project promised at the height of debate over crime in the wealthy neighborhood of Buckhead, when some residents threatened to secede from the city altogether if police presence wasn't bolstered in the area.

At the beginning of the 2025 legislative session at the Georgia State Capitol, more than 100 housing-related bills were on the agenda, mirroring the large scale of the Peach State's housing crisis. Fewer than 10 housing bills survived Crossover Day on March 6 - a deadline marking whether bills move from the House to the Senate in the Georgia General Assembly or, in a two-year session, are left in limbo until 2026.
