Over the years, Ramchandra led dozens of others to Christ, including future church leader Tara Chand. It is said that even the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar summoned Ramchandra to dissuade him from becoming a Christian. However, this only led to one of the Emperor’s servants coming to faith in Christ. Ramchandra eventually became the headmaster of India’s first engineering college, Thomason College of Civil Engineering (now IIT Roorkee). Later, he became a tutor to the Maharaja of Patiala.

This exciting prospect should prompt us to reflect on at least six questions about the future of the church in India. Will its Works Prove its Faith? Christians can often create a false dichotomy between preaching the gospel and serving the vulnerable. As a result, it creates camps and cliques of Christians who want to pit one against the other.

In the midst of a heatwave, India’s general elections are past the halfway mark. Nearly 1 billion Indians are registered as voters in the world’s largest democracy. On June 4, after the outcome of the election is clear, the winning party or coalition of parties will form a ruling government. They will enjoy the privilege of naming the next prime minister. Politics comes out of the Greek word politika which means, “affairs of the city.” Why should Christians care about the affairs of the city?

Gentleness is like a new language I am trying to learn, one that initially felt foreign. My brain never really registered its sound and manners; it passed right through me. My world—both exterior and interior—felt loud and shouty. I spoke through the slamming of doors and inside me there was a resident critic, whose voice drowned everything out. Before I used words for my vocation to write, I used them to cut people down. It was many years after I found Jesus that his gentleness really reached me.
