    1 INTRODUCTION Opioid misuse and dependence continue to be a public health crisis throughout the world.1 Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a serious public health problem, affects over 35 million people worldwide, and more than 2.1 million in the United States alone. OUD mortality and morbidity have worsened with the spread of high-potency synthetic opioids such as fentanyl in the unregulated drug supply.
