Since 2019, according to wildlife experts 200 elephants have been put in trucks with feet shackled by heavy chains and transported to Ambani’s new wildlife resort.It appears to be quite a wild venture as these poor beasts are kept confined to an enclosure and maintained under a strict routine.Some of them must be newly captured and given a short training in domesticated life.

Over the past one year Manipur has been witness to Meitei-Kuki conflict like nowhere seen even among Hindu-Muslim communities. Even if you may have totally segregated Hindu and Muslim residential areas like in some places in Gujarat, it is possible for a person of one community to pay a courtesy visit to the other community. But not so in Manipur. A Kuki government official cannot work in a Meitei area and vice-versa.

On May 1, 2024, the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) decided to defer the accreditation of India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC-India) for the second consecutive year. This decision, made during a meeting of the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) with representatives from New Zealand, South Africa, Honduras, and Greece,(The Hindu 13, May, 2024), marks a significant setback for NHRC-India.

Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC, hereafter) was created under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 (PHRA, hereafter) to provide for the constitution of a National Human Rights Commission, State Human Rights Commissions in States, and Human Rights Courts, “for better protection of human rights and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto”. PHRA came into effect on 28.9.1993.
