We, the Community Network Against Protected Areas (CNAPA), strongly condemn and resist the recent atrocity, where two youths lost their lives to firing by armed forest guards inside Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam. As per ground reports, Jaliluddin and Sameeruddin of Dhingbari Chapari village of Nagaon District, along with a few other villagers, went to Rowmari Beel wetland to catch fish as part of their traditional livelihood.

The PUCL condemns the decision of the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena to grant Delhi Police sanction to prosecute writer Arundhati Roy and Sheikh Showkat Hussain, (former Professor of International Law at Central University of Kashmir), in a 2010 case for offences under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

On the morning of June 5, 18 year old Ratnesh Kumar Shrivas, widely known for his gentle nature and behaviour, was walking on a road to catch some transport for taking him to the town of Banda, where he hoped to get some plumbing work for this day. He had left his home in Gharoda village of Mahua block, Banda district (Uttar Pradesh) only a few minutes back. He lived in an extended family of washerman or dhobi community which is listed as scheduled caste or SC in Uttar Pradesh.

Harish S. Wankhede is Assistant Professor at the Centre for Political Studies (CPS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He was visiting scholar at the Centre for South Asia, Stanford University, California, USA. He was awarded PhD from the CPS, JNU in the year 2015. Wankhede has published research articles on the topics of Caste, Dalit movement, Hindutva and social justice in major national and international journals.
