A man who whipped a passer-by with a belt then stole a mobile phone in a “random attack” in the centre of Belfast has been jailed for 20 months. Jamie Smith (31), from Glenveagh Drive in Belfast, was sentenced at Belfast Crown Court on Friday by Judge Mark Reel, on a charge of the robbery of a mobile phone, which he carried out in the early hours of October 9 last year. Judge Reel told Smith he should be “ashamed” of his “drunken, loutish behaviour”.

As the case involves cruelty to children, neither defendants can be named to protect the identity of the youngsters. The 38-year old male defendant pleaded guilty to three drugs charges and possessing criminal property amounting to £25,000.

The 38-year old male defendant pleaded guilty to three drugs charges and possessing criminal property amounting to £25,000. He was handed a four-year sentence which was divided equally between prison and licence.
