A “child predator” former primary school teacher has been jailed for sexual offences committed against two 10-year old pupils. Police said William Maher used his position of trust to take advantage of young boys. Jailed for 12 months, he “preyed on the innocence of his extremely young victims”. He will spend an additional 12 months on licence.

A 32-year old man who broke into a woman’s west Belfast home and who swung a hammer at her when she confronted him on the street has been jailed for 14 months. The defendant, who cannot be named due to a reporting restriction, will spend an additional 14 months on licence when he is released from custody. Belfast Crown Court heard that the defendant and a second male broke into a property on the Glenalina Road in the Ballymurphy area in early hours of January 23, 2023.

A convicted sex offender who sent a sexually explicit video to the Instagram account of a 10-year old girl has been jailed. The video sent by Joseph McCauley was intercepted by the youngster’s mother who contacted the PSNI. McCauley, whose address was given on court papers as ‘unknown’ and who attended Wednesday’s hearing via videolink with Maghaberry, was handed a 19-month sentence on a charge of attempting to cause a child to look at an image of a person engaging in sexual activity.
