For playwright and actor Autumn Ness, theatre has been “the passion” since she young. “I think I got started the way most people do, just loving big stories and playing through them in my head.” She’s always taken creative liberties with the art, which explains a choice she made at her very first audition when she was eight years old — Hansel and Gretel, coincidentally at Children’s Theatre Company.

I am officiating a funeral service this afternoon. I have two other services coming up. My heartaches so very much. I am still grieving the loss of my brother-in-law Paul Rogers who died in a tragic farm accident in June. I think of my sister Deb all alone out on the farm back home in Minnesota. I have been ministering to a lovely lady named Susan who is in the hospital. Her son recently died. I will be doing that service. My heart aches for Susan. We grieve hard, because we love hard.

As you listen to their heartbreak, you’re moved with compassion and want to support them. They share about the devastating loss of a loved one; as you listen, you can tell they feel hurt by God. In that moment, of course you pray with them, but you also desire to provide ongoing support.

Shadi Ghaheri first encountered English as an audience member. “It was the first time the show was being publicly produced,” she says of Atlantic Theater’s 2022 production. “I was just [an] audience member at that point … and I was with the story nonstop — there wasn’t a moment that they didn’t have me. And it was lovely to see this story that [understands] me.
