MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin governor’s creative use of his uniquely powerful veto to lock in a school funding increase for 400 years may be “attention grabbing,” but it was constitutional, the state Supreme Court ruled Friday. The 4-3 ruling from the liberal-controlled court affirms the partial veto power of Wisconsin governors, which is the broadest of any state. Both Republicans and Democrats have used the partial veto to reshape spending bills passed by the Legislature.

The report verifies that the pilot, 63-year-old Terry Dolan, flew from Naples, Florida, to Des Moines, Iowa, where he refueled and left at 11:12 a.m. en route to the airport in Blaine. Dolan, who was a U.S. Bank executive, contacted air traffic control at the Blaine airport to say he was inbound for runway 9. The traffic controller verified that Dolan had current weather information and gave landing clearance to runway 9, the report says.

A large grass fire in Morrison County that started Wednesday night was 70% contained Thursday. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office says that the fire started around 9 p.m. Wednesday night and was possibly endangering buildings in Hillman Township between Partridge Road and 355th Avenue. At 3:20 a.m., an alert was sent to residents in the area warning of the fire nearby and telling them to be cautious of it potentially approaching.

State funding that helps non-public schools with essential expenses like busing and textbooks is in jeopardy for the first time in more than 50 years under a budget proposal from Governor Tim Walz that is making its way through the state legislature. “For over 50 years, we’ve had the support of our local government making sure students have the essentials,” says Tricia Menzhuber, principal of St. John Paul II Catholic School in northeast Minneapolis.

One person is dead and two others are in the hospital with serious injuries from a Tuesday morning crash in Polk County, Wisconsin. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, at 10:40 a.m., the emergency call center took a call for a two-vehicle crash at State Highway 65 and County Highway F (85th Avenue), which is about 10 minutes west of Amery. A car traveling eastbound did not stop at a stop sign and went into the path of a southbound pickup, the press release says.
