The character of Bridget Jones is important to a lot of people, myself included, first from the hilarious book “Bridget Jones’s Diary” by Helen Fielding and in her onscreen incarnation by Renée Zellweger in 2001. “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” finds our Bridget once more single, still essentially wacky, but dealing with grown-up struggles far beyond gaining a few pounds and wearing a compression undergarment. “The Wedding Banquet” is a sweet and unexpected romantic dramedy, a remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 film about two couples, all best friends, who attempt to reconfigure their relationships to fool family members, government agencies and more. The outcomes of these misguided schemes are, at times, funny, but mostly affecting and bittersweet. It was refreshing to experience characters that looked and acted like these four stars — Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan and Lily Gladstone.

“A Minecraft Movie” is undoubtedly the silliest bunch of nonsense ever to be committed to film (or hard drive). This is not even an insult; indeed, I believe it was a goal achieved. I’m not even mad at it, as the kids say. This movie was not made for me, but I could detect there was some kind of intention, however inexplicable, that was successfully carried out. It worked on a level I am not privy to, but I could still tell it worked. It was bonkers, and the audience went crazy for it.

Sometimes an idea seems like such a sure thing no one in charge pays attention to the details that ensure quality. I think that’s the principle that led to “The Electric State” being less than the sum of its parts. Set in the 1990s in a post-apocalyptic world decimated by a robot war, a teenage girl (Millie Bobby Brown) teams up with a roguish hero (Chris Pratt) to rescue her brother and humanity from an all-consuming technology created by Stanley Tucci.
