Lagniappe, which translates to "something extra," is a weekly alternative newspaper located in Mobile, Alabama. It initially launched as a bi-weekly publication on July 24, 2002, under the leadership of co-publishers Ashley Toland and Rob Holbert, who currently hold the positions of editor and managing editor. In April 2014, Lagniappe transitioned to a weekly format. Since 2004, the Mobile Press Club has recognized Lagniappe for its outstanding reporting and feature articles.

    A documentary detailing the massive sewage system failure of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship in what inevitably became known as the “poop cruise” in 2013 and its ensuing journey to Mobile is slated to debut on Tuesday on Netflix. Titled “Trainwreck: Poop Cruise,” the documentary will cover the five-day ordeal, during which the 3,100 passengers and 1,000 crew members were forced to use plastic bags, red biohazard bags and buckets for human waste, which subsequently accumulated in public areas.

    A pair of Naval ships at the center of the Pentagon’s “anti-DEI” campaign are currently docked in the Port of Mobile. However, the extent of the work both vessels will undergo while in Mobile — including a possible name change — is unclear. As of Monday, June 23, the Alabama Port Authority’s daily harbormaster reports show that the USNS Harvey Milk and the USNS Medgar Evers are currently undergoing work while situated along Mobile River.

    Baseball takes center stage in Mobile on Tuesday, June 24. The day will begin with the official unveiling of the Hall of Fame Walk statues, five of the six featuring Mobilians who are enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame — Hank Aaron, Billy Williams, Ozzie Smith, Satchel Paige and Willie McCovey. Williams and Smith are both scheduled to appear at the ceremony, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. and is open to the public, in front of the Mobile Convention Center on Water Street.
