DiscussionThis study is the first to prospectively analyse health complaints during the season using the IGF guidelines for reporting of injuries and illnesses in the amateur golfing population. We found injury and illness rates to be similar or lower compared with those reported in many other sports. Injuries located at the lumbosacral spine, knee and shoulder had both the highest incidence and burden. Injuries were associated with increasing age, previous injury and osteoarthritis.

There are several tools that can be used to perform mental health surveillance in sport. The selection of a specific tool depends on the aim of the project, the study design (ie, how, who, where, when, frequency, etc.), the available resources and other parameters. Please see table 5 for a summary of the various mental health surveillance tools and the roles of athletes and the athlete healthcare team. Translation of the tools into other languages to improve end-user comprehension is recommended.
