IntroductionThe mouse double minute 2 (MDM2) gene is one of the most critical negative regulators of p53, a protein colloquially referred to as the guardian of the genome. MDM2 overexpression is known to have a tumorigenic effect through the inactivation of normal p53 tumour suppressor function. Alterations of the MDM2 gene have been reported in sarcomas, carcinomas, glioblastoma and some haematological malignancies.
