The Rising Sun community farm in Wallsend is still under the care of North Tyneside Council as the search for a new provider continues. The day-to-day management of the farm was brought into the local authority in March 2023 after the Rising Sun Farm Trading company filed for insolvency. Six months on from the latest update from the council, the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme has been told that they expect to make further announcements on the farm’s future later this summer.

Industrial action among Newcastle University academics reached its 25th day on Thursday with three Labour MPs and unions pledging support. Unionised Newcastle University academics have been on discontinuous strike since March, protesting over the institution’s target to slash its wage bill by £20m, equating to around 300 jobs.
