Uptown artist Ashley Kennedy has painted five murals in her life, all done with Chicago in mind. Her latest is actually a re-do. A new-ish mural was unveiled Tuesday at the Buena Avenue underpass at DuSable Lake Shore Drive. It replaces an earlier work she painted featuring the beloved and endangered bird that was covered up this summer. “The plovers are important to our neighborhood, and they’re important to me,” Kennedy, 45, said.

The first article I wrote for The Loyola Phoenix was a review of the 2021 Clint Eastwood film “Cry Macho.” While the 91-year-old’s movie was a jumbled mess, the article was a huge source of pride for little Austin Hojdar during his second year at Loyola. My first front-page story was a look at delays with Loyola’s safe-ride program 8-RIDE — aptly titled “L8-RIDE.”But my favorite article from my first year on The Phoenix was a love letter to de Nobili Dining Hall’s cheese pizza.

As this school year nears its end, I will be passing the editor-in-chief torch to none other than current Sports Editor Griffin Krueger. Krueger is a third-year political science major who has been writing for The Phoenix since his first day at Loyola. “I am very excited,” Krueger said.

Loyola and the greater Chicago community experienced a partial solar eclipse April 8 as the moon obstructed approximately 94% of the sun. Hundreds of students and faculty made their way outside of the classroom to witness the early afternoon’s celestial phenomenon. Dr. Willetta Greene-Johnson, who teaches physics at Loyola, said it was great for her to see students care about the eclipse — even if they didn’t study physics.

In their penultimate regular season game, the No. 13 Loyola men’s volleyball team defeated Queens University of Charlotte March 30 in three sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-22). The win cemented the full Easter weekend sweep of the Royals, who fell to the Ramblers two nights before. “They did some different things, they had a personnel change, and with that comes different energy on the court,” head coach John Hawks said.
