A Hoffman Estates man accused of attacking DePaul students who were showing support for Israel on campus was ordered held awaiting trial Thursday. Adam Erkan, 20, was charged with two felony counts of a hate crime and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, Chicago police said. The alleged attack happened on Nov. 6 outside the DePaul student center in the 2200 block of North Sheffield Avenue in Lincoln Park.

Hundreds gathered Thursday night at Deerfield Public Schools District 109’s board meeting to voice support for a trans student after the suburban district came under federal inquiry for alleged Title IX violations. A small group with Moms for Liberty Lake County — a local chapter of the national organization that has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center — voiced opposition. A line wrapped outside and around the building more than half an hour after the meeting began.
