If you're into anime, light novels, or visual novels, Gen Urobuchi's influence is everywhere. He's the mind behind some of anime's biggest hits, including Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass, and Fate Zero. That's just a fraction of his work, and his status as a legend is hard to dispute. So when I saw he was involved in creating Rusty Rabbit, you can imagine my excitement. Part side-scrolling adventure/platformer, part visual novel, Rusty Rabbit is a charming game on the surface, no doubt.

Promise Mascot Agency's original reveal trailer contained the words "From the creators of Paradise Killer," and that's all that needed to be said to know I was on board. Paradise Killer was a game of immaculate vibes and eccentricity, so I hoped that, at the bare minimum, Promise Mascot Agency would be similar in that regard. Thankfully, Promise Mascot Agency is even more zany than developer Kaizen Game Works' first game.

If there's one thing Obsidian Entertainment is known for, it's for fantastic writing. That was true with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II in 2004, true with Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, and still true all the way in 2022 with the release of the incredible game that is Pentiment. In 2025, we have Avowed. Fear not, for Obsidian's quality of writing is still there with Avowed. It is, in essence, Obsidian doing what they do best: Adventures with gripping narratives and fleshed-out characters.

Last year, I made the brazen claim that "2023 will go down as one of the best years for game releases in a long time." I might have to eat my words after seeing what 2024 had to offer. I played the most JRPGs I ever have, and that's most definitely reflected in this list. I also had to cut a few things out of my list, which hurts, but I'd like to give honorable mentions to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Lorn's Lure, and Mullet MadJack to name just a few. 10.

2024 was a stellar year for games, with a ton of standout releases. You had indie games made by small teams dominate the industry, as well as AAA games polished to a high sheen. So many genres had incredible releases, so just about everyone had something new and awesome to mess around with. AAA games feel like what we gravitate to when we want our mind blown or absolutely saturated in something, whether that's an insanely detailed world or crazy action. Indie games have a much wider variety, and because by necessity they have to have a great hook or idea to form a game around, those that usually see the most success are also the most interesting games of the year.
